Editorial and Graphic Design
FunkZine, a unique project born in the Design course at PUC-Rio, is dedicated to uncovering the optimistic essence of funk in Rio. It bridges the genre's historical roots with its current reality, presenting a series of zines, each dedicated to a classic funk song. These zines are a collection of lyrics and images and a platform for critical analysis, MC testimonies, and photographs, offering a comprehensive view of the genre.
The graphic design translates the essence of funk through a "deconstructed" layout, hand scribbles, and the predominant use of neutral fonts such as Helvetica, representing the authenticity and improvisation characteristic of the genre. The zines were printed in black and white, with vibrant color papers representing the diversity and energy of funk.
In addition to the printed material, the project expanded into the digital realm with an accessible website that makes all of the zines' content available in Epub3 format, ensuring accessibility to a broader audience. The distribution of the zines was designed for public spaces such as cafes and bars, as well as online, making it easier for NGOs and communities to access the content.
